Decants
What is a decant and why is it necessary?
What is a decant?
A decant is a temporary move arranged by us when work needs to be carried out in your home that cannot be done safely or comfortably while you remain living there.
During a decant, you will move to a temporary property or alternative accommodation for a short period. Once the required work is completed, you will be able to return to your home (unless otherwise agreed).
Each decant is considered on an individual basis, taking into account household needs, including children, pets, health conditions, or mobility requirements.
What happens during a decant?
We will talk to you first and explain the reason
You’ll be told how long the move is expected to last
We’ll explain where you will stay and what support is available
Our team will stay in contact with you throughout the process
We understand that being temporarily moved from your home can be difficult.
We are committed to keeping disruption to a minimum, communicating clearly and honestly and supporting you throughout the process. It's all about helping you return home as soon as work is safely completed
Decants are only used when absolutely necessary. They are arranged to ensure:
Some repairs or improvement works can make a home unsafe to live in temporarily. This may include:
- Major structural works
- Extensive damp, mould, or flood repairs
- Electrical or gas safety works
- Fire safety improvements
A decant helps keep you and your household safe while the work is carried out.
Certain jobs cannot be done properly while a property is occupied. Moving temporarily allows contractors to:
- Complete work more efficiently
- Minimise disruption
- Deliver a better long‑term result for your home
As a housing provider, Peaks & Plains has a responsibility to ensure homes meet safety and quality standards. A decant may be the best way to meet these obligations while protecting residents’ wellbeing.
