Paying your rent in advance
Why is it important to pay rent in advance?
When you signed your tenancy agreement with the Trust, you agreed to pay your rent in advance. Whether you pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly, you’re responsible for making sure your rent is paid in line with your tenancy.
Staying ahead with payments helps keep your tenancy on track, avoids unnecessary stress and gives you greater peace of mind. Paying in advance can also make budgeting easier by creating a regular payment routine.
Customers who receive Universal Credit or Housing Benefit should remember that they are still responsible for making sure their rent account stays in advance. As benefits are often paid for a previous four-week period, this may mean they need to pay a little extra for a while to get back on track. We can help customers work out a plan to clear any shortfall between payments.
If rent payments are missed, arrears can build up quickly. We will always try to work with customers to find a solution, but ongoing arrears can lead to repayment plans, legal action and, ultimately, put a tenancy at risk.
The key message is simple: if you’re struggling, don’t wait. Speaking to us early can help you access advice, agree manageable payments and prevent problems from escalating.
